Maltreated OFW in Saudi Finds Help Using Facebook (Video)

Nargelene de Guia Mendez went to Abha City in Saudi Arabia for hopes of giving her family a shot for a better life. Unfortunately, her employer gave her a nightmare.

Mendez, a native of Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro, endured emotional, physical and psychological pain in the hands of her employer, who is a retired police officer. She said she was beaten up, locked inside a room along with four more Filipina and ordered to sleep inside a cabinet.

When her sibling in the Philippines found about her condition, she created a Facebook fan page that will seek help. The Facebook video that she uploaded instantly went viral and reach half a million shares in just a few days.

Because of the shares, the video reached Philippine authorities in KSA. The information was also verified when Mendez siblings also contacted the consulate.

The Consulate, which was located in Jeddah, traveled 10 hours to Abha on October 29 to rescue Mendez. However, they failed to get her, but they went back the day after and got her back after they threatened her employer of informing higher authorities about the abuse.

Hazel Mendoza, an official at the Assistance to Nationals Section Officer said Ms. Mendez is now happy.

"At least masaya na siya. Tumatawa na kanina. Pagkakita sa akin umiyak at nangangatog siya sabi niya 'Ma'am, huwag mo akong iiwan," Mendoza said.

Mendez thanked the consulate in Jeddah and the Filipinos who helped her.

"Nagpapasalamat po ako sa konsulado ng Jeddah, sa walang-sawang at tigil ng dalawang araw para makuha ako sa amo ko, ganun din sa kababayan ko, okay na ako," she said.

However, according to her Facebook post she was the only helper saved from the maltreating hands of her employer. The other three remained.
